Steelers urged to sign Super Bowl champion defender

NFL offseason speculation is in full effect, and the Pittsburgh Steelers have been predicted to upgrade their safety position.

Sports Illustrated’s Jacob Punturi already linked the Steelers to a blockbuster trade for Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker, but if that doesn’t pan out, the writer suggested that Pittsburgh target a Super Bowl champion instead: former Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills safety Taylor Rapp.

“Outside of this hypothetical monumental deal, there is one real option on the table,” Punturi wrote. “The team could double down on the veteran free agent additions and target 28-year-old Taylor Rapp. The former Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills safety is not a starter anymore, but he’s a Super Bowl winner with plenty of experience. Having him as the team’s number four safety would be a huge upgrade over where things currently stand.”

Rapp, who was selected by the Rams in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, won Super Bowl LVI with Los Angeles. He appeared in 57 games and made 48 starts from 2019 to 2022 for the Rams before signing with the Bills in 2023. He suffered a knee injury in October 2025 and underwent surgery, missing the rest of the season. Rapp was released by the Bills in March 2026.

When healthy, Rapp would, at worst, compete for playing time with Jaquan Brisker and DeShon Elliott. But if the hypothetical signing paid off, the Steelers’ secondary would be a top-three unit — and it wouldn’t be No. 3 or No. 2.
