What opposing CWS coaches are saying about North Carolina

North Carolina will lean on a mature pitching staff with a dominant bullpen and a veteran lineup as it makes its 13th College World Series appearance and second in three seasons when play begins Friday.

Opposing coaches told Baseball America that the Tar Heels enter Omaha with one of the nation’s most dependable late-game pitching formulas, allowing them to script the final innings of a game more precisely than most teams.

While many teams are still piecing together the last third of a game, North Carolina typically starts a weekend already knowing how it wants the final 12 outs to unfold. With right-handers Caden Glauber and Walker McDuffie, the Tar Heels can be aggressive with pitching decisions.

“They can start playing bullpen baseball before most teams are comfortable doing it,” one coach told Baseball America. “That’s a luxury not many programs have in Omaha. Those reliable bullpen innings are just so important.”

The rotation has backed up that plan. Ryan Lynch and Jason DeCaro, both ranked among the top 100 draft prospects in the 2026 class, routinely provide quality starts that feed into the bullpen’s strengths. Coaches also praised the staff’s maturity, saying the Tar Heels rarely give away free chances.

Offensively, transfer additions have turned an already talented roster into a deeper and more experienced lineup. Opposing coaches pointed to the middle of the order as a particular challenge, highlighting outfielder Owen Hull and first baseman Erik Paulsen as dangerous bats who can change a game quickly.

The broader scouting report, though, is that there are few soft spots.

“They don’t have to beat you one way,” a coach said. “You can survive the power and they’ll run. You can defend the running game and they’ll grind out at-bats. They’re built to make you uncomfortable.”

The Tar Heels will face Ole Miss at 7 p.m. Friday in the second game of the College World Series opening round.
