The Golden State Warriors know their championship window is nearing its end, with Steve Kerr on a short-term deal and Draymond Green and Stephen Curry both approaching the final stages of their careers.
However, it has been widely reported that the franchise is fully pursuing LeBron James. The four-time NBA champion has already met with the organization.
“LeBron James is preparing to meet with the Warriors this week as an unrestricted free agent. After Draymond Green opted out today, Golden State has the necessary flexibility to sign LeBron and trade for Anthony Davis. LeBron leaving the Lakers is gaining significant traction,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.
Now, following a recent report, there is a growing belief that the Warriors may not be able to land James without making a blockbuster move.
“The Warriors believe they are currently not at the top of LeBron James’ shortlist, which could make them do an aggressive trade to secure his agreement, per Anthony V. Slater,” Sidery posted. “Golden State has the necessary draft assets to make a win-now trade immediately.”
Sidery also outlined what a potential mock trade could look like to help bring James to the Bay Area. In this hypothetical deal, the Warriors acquire New Orleans Pelicans’ 3-and-D wing while sending Kristaps Porziņģis, Brandin Podziemski, and additional assets in return.
“A potential trade framework between the Pelicans and Warriors for Trey Murphy III: Golden State: Murphy. New Orleans: Brandin Podziemski, Kristaps Porziņģis, Moses Moody, future draft capital. The Warriors might need to make a splash to finish their recruitment of LeBron James,” Sidery wrote.
Murphy is an extremely athletic wing and a disruptive defender on the perimeter. The Warriors understand that landing James may require a major move, and this type of deal could be the key to making it happen.
Murphy is currently on a $112 million deal with the Pelicans. This process could take time, as James has the ability to choose his destination freely. If Golden State is truly all-in on him, this is the type of trade framework that may need to be executed. Murphy would bring athleticism and defensive versatility to a roster built around Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and potentially James if the deal comes to fruition.
