The Boston Red Sox will look to start to turn their season around this weekend, as they travel to the Bronx for a matchup against the New York Yankees

Before the series kicks off, the Red Sox have made a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates to add another arm to their bullpen.

According to Ali Alexander of 7News Boston, the Pittsburgh Pirates have traded left-handed reliever Joe La Sorsa to the Red Sox in exchange for cash.

“It was reported a few days ago that the southpaw was triggering an upward mobility clause in his minor league deal,” Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors wrote Thursday night. “Alexander says that La Sorsa will be with the Sox in New York tomorrow as they kick off a series against the Yankees.”

La Sorsa, 28, signed a minor league contract with the Pirates and threw 26 innings this season at Triple-A Indianapolis. He posted a 3.46 ERA.

The Red Sox will be his fourth time in four years in the Majors. La Sorsa made his debut with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2023 and made stops with the Washington Nationals (2023-24) and Cincinnati Reds (2025).

In 57 career innings, La Sorsa owns a 5.21 ERA with 44 strikeouts compared to 16 walks.

It’s unclear what role La Sorsa will fill for the Red Sox, but there’s a strong chance he will serve as an innings eater or long-relief guy.

He suited up for Team Italy during the most recent edition of the World Baseball Classic.
