Celtics icon Kevin McHale has strong words for those who doubt Larry Bird in today's NBA

How would Hall of Fame Boston Celtics forward Larry Bird fare if he played in the NBA of today? If you ask one of he people who knew his game best as a player, fellow Hall of Fame Celtics forward Kevin McHale, the answer is an unequivocal very, very good. The Hibbing, Minnesota native recently shared his point of view on this seemingly endless debate of Bird’s potential on-court acumen in this day and age in a recent phone interview with the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach.
“These are the same dudes that can’t guard (Los Angeles Lakers star) Luka Doncic, and Luka Doncic is lighting them up,” said the three-time Boston champion of those NBA players in the modern era doubting whether Bird would be so good today.
“And I’m thinking, ‘Larry is bigger, stronger, faster, and meaner than Luka Doncic. And if Luka is lighting these dudes up, it’d be a five-alarm fire what Larry would do’.”
“I just laugh at these people today,” he continued. “Larry would go by you a hell of a lot faster than Luka would go by you. He was a straight-line driver, and he was also just a horse.”
Counterfactuals are by definition unprovable — but in this instance, we are going to side with McHale that a Hall of Fame player of another era who won the league’s 3-point contest three times in a row would do just fine today.
