Barnes signs new one-year deal with Altrincham

Former Blackburn Rovers defender Sam Barnes has agreed a new one-year deal with Altrincham.
Barnes, 25, joined on a free transfer last summer from Barrow and made 21 appearances for the National League side, despite missing nearly three months of the campaign through injury.
The centre-half began his career at his hometown club Blackburn before moving to Barrow in 2024 after making just one senior appearance for Rovers in 2023 in the League Cup against Walsall.
He told the club website: “I’m really pleased to be continuing with Alty. I’ve loved my time at the club so far and it has really helped me to get my enjoyment of playing football back.
“I’m excited to work with the gaffer again and to help the squad achieve a positive 2026-27.”
Altrincham manager Neil Gibson added: “I’m really pleased to keep Sam for another year. We saw so much potential in Sam last season and we know the pedigree of the player is there.
“He had an extremely unlucky season, but we saw what he was capable of when he came back in after his injury – a really confident, ball-playing central defender who’s mobile, quick and can play high up the pitch. He really suits the style of defender I want at the football club.”
