Oklahoma AG calls for Big 12 action against Texas Tech, Brendan Sorsby

Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond sent the Big 12 Conference a letter recommending that action be taken against Texas Tech University following quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s gambling violations.

Drummond responded to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who said sanctions against Texas Tech would violate antitrust laws, saying his claim is meritless.

“The idea that the Big 12 may not sanction the actions of one of its members under an agreed-upon preexisting contract is facially absurd,” Drummond said in the letter. “By adopting and enforcing its bylaws, the Big 12 Conference is simply ‘upholding integrity and fair play among [its] membership.”

Drummond also noted that Sorsby broke NCAA rules by wagering roughly $90,000 on sports across four years, even betting 40 times on games involving his own team at Indiana. Sorsby, 22, spent two years at Indiana and two at Cincinnati before transferring to Texas Tech in 2025.

“If Texas Tech will not do the right thing, the Big 12 should,” Drummond said, adding his office stands ready to assist the conference.

Drummond said his office has a direct interest in the integrity of the conference, as Oklahoma State has been a member of the Big 12 since 1996.

“My office stands ready to assist the Big 12 if Texas Tech’s leadership attempts to punish the Conference for doing the right thing,” he wrote.

Texas Tech posted a 21-minute video on social media outlining its position on the issue. The school reiterated its support for the student-athlete, who is likely to come back to the Red Raiders in the fall.

“There’s no reason whatsoever to question the integrity of our athletics department, or the competitive product that we put on the fields or on the courts each and every time that we go out,” Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt said. “Integrity of the game is sacred, and that’s why we’ve gone to such great lengths to ensure the monitoring and the compliance measures are in place for Brendan’s return.”

Drummond called the Big 12 to act under Bylaw 3.6, which allows the Conference to sanction member schools if a “Supermajority of Disinterested Directors determines” that a member school has “engaged in any action or a course of conduct materially adverse to the best interests of the Conference as a whole.”
