Chelsea officially unveiled Xabi Alonso as their new manager on Thursday after the Spaniard arrived at Cobham for the start of pre-season.

Alonso agreed a four-year deal to become Chelsea’s new manager in May, replacing Liam Rosenior.

The 44-year-old arrives with huge expectations, with Chelsea enduring a disappointing campaign last season, missing out on European qualification.

Speaking for the first time since taking charge, Alonso highlighted his ambitions for the west London side.

“That we share a feeling we are doing things the right way and that we are on the right path to success,” he told chelseafccom.

“We know that success is a consequence of good work, of quality decisions, of the good culture that we want to build. That’s the beauty of such a complex but nice process with so many people involved.

“Always getting the best out of everyone, and everyone is committed with the last goal that is being the best we can and giving our best. If we all share, day by day, that feeling, we can optimistic about the future.”

Chelsea prepared to back Alonso

Chelsea’s hierarchy have shown their readiness to back Alonso. They have given him the managerial title, suggesting they want him to have a greater say in decision-making.

Alonso is already having an influence in the club’s recruitment this summer.

The Blues have completed the signing of Italy international Marco Palestra, with Alonso reportedly influencing the move.

Chelsea also pursued a move for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka at the request of the Spaniard, although the deal ultimately fell through.

Chelsea, under BlueCo, have previously come under huge scrutiny for limiting managers’ influence over football decision.

They now appear to have abandoned that approach as they look to give Alonso the best chance of thriving at the club.
