Wabash Valley to the Pros: Herrin gets win July 2

Keeping extremely busy of late, Terre Haute South High School graduate Tim Herrin got the win July 2 for the Cleveland Guardians as they defeated their AL Central rivals, the Chicago White Sox, by a 6-5 score.

It was Herrin’s first win of the season, then he got the loss last Saturday as the Guardians fell 3-1 to the White Sox. He went an inning in relief, allowing a hit and a run while striking out one batter. Then in a 7-6 loss to the White Sox on Sunday, Herrin went 0.1 inning and struck out one. In a 6-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, Herrin went 0.2 innings in relief. He’s now 1-4 with a 3.06 ERA through 41 games played, all in relief, and he has 27 strikeouts in 32.1 innings pitched.

Herrin, 29, was selected by the then Cleveland Indians (now Guardians) in the 29th round of the 2018 MLB draft.

He signed with the then Indians and made his professional debut with the Arizona Complex League Indians, going 0–1 with a 6.16 ERA over 19 innings.

He worked his way through the minor-league ladder before making his major-league debut with the Guardians on April 2, 2023.

• Northview graduate Braydon Tucker got the loss for the Class AA Reading Fightin Phils back on July 3 as they fell 12-4 to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. He started and went 3.1 innings allowing nine hits, five runs and two walks. Tucker is now 6-5 with a 2.89 ERA through 14 games, all starts, and he has 66 strikeouts in 74.2 innings pitched.

• Shakamak graduate Braden Scott, who has been with the York Revolution of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, had his contract purchased by the Atlanta Braves organization. The Revolution announced the transfer on the team’s website Friday.

Scott was 5-4 with a 4.00 ERA in 13 starts with York this season. He led the league with 104 strikeouts and 81.0 innings, while allowing just 67 hits and 32 walks. Scott also led the league with a .226 opponents average, tied for second with a 1.22 WHIP, and ranked third in ERA.

The Braves assigned him to their Class AA affiliate, the Columbus Clingstones in Columbus, Ga.

Indiana State alumni continue to perfect their craft on the baseball diamond as well.

• Colin Rea started and got the win as he went 5.1 innings for the Chicago Cubs in a 9-7 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday. He allowed seven hits, three runs and two walks while striking out two. Rea is now 7-5 with a 4.75 ERA through 19 games, 15 of which he’s started, and has a save and 70 strikeouts in 94.2 innings pitched.

• Sean Manaea got the loss for the New York Mets as they fell 14-3 to the Atlanta Braves last Saturday. He started and went five innings allowing six hits, six runs and a walk while striking out four. Then in a 7-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday, Manaea got the win. He went seven innings and allowed six hits, three runs and a walk while striking out six. Manaea is now 2-4 with a 4.56 ERA through 20 games, six of which he’s started, and has 74 strikeouts in 75 innings pitched.

• In a 9-7 loss for the Class AAA El Paso Chihuahuas to the Sacramento River Cats back on July 2, Clay Dungan had a run scored. Then in a 4-2 win over Sacramento on July 3, he recorded a hit. In a 9-2 loss for the Chihuahuas to the Oklahoma City Comets on Wednesday, Dungan had a hit, walk and a run scored. Then in a 6-3 loss to OKC on Thursday, he had a walk and a run scored.

• Matt Jachec pitched an inning of relief for the Class AA Akron RubberDucks in a 12-10 loss to the Erie SeaWolves back on July 2 and walked one while striking out one. Then in a 4-3, 10-inning loss to the SeaWolves on Sunday, he went two innings striking out four. In a 5-3 win over the Chesapeake Baysox on Thursday, Jachec went 1.2 innings in relief allowing a hit and a walk while striking out five. He’s now 2-0 with a 2.15 ERA through 21 games, one of which he’s started, and he has a save and 44 strikeouts in 29.1 innings pitched.

• In a 6-1 win for the Class AA Birmingham Barons over the Montgomery Biscuits on Sunday, Grant Magill had two hits and a run scored. Then in a 7-1 loss to the Clingtones on Thursday, he had a hit and a walk.

• Luke Hayden got bumped back to the High-A Dayton Dragons prior to their game against the Lansing Lugnuts last Saturday. He got the loss as the Dragons fell 4-3. Hayden went 4.2 innings in relief allowing six hits, three runs and two walks while striking out six. He’s now 1-2 with a 6.20 ERA through eight games, six of which he’s started, and he has 29 strikeouts in 24.2 innings pitched.

• In an 8-4 loss for the High-A Cedar Rapids Kernels to the Quad Cities River Bandits on Sunday, Luis Hernandez had two hits and a run scored.

• In a 10-8 win for the Frederick Keys over the Brooklyn Cyclones last Saturday, Randal Diaz had a hit, RBI, a walk and two runs scored. Then in an 8-7 win over the Jersey Shore BlueClaws on Tuesday, Diaz had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. In a 9-5 loss to the BlueClaws on Wednesday, Diaz had an RBI double.

• Jacob Pruitt pitched an inning of relief for the Class A Clearwater Threshers on July 3 as they fell to the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels. He allowed two walks and struck out two. Pruitt is now 3-1 with a 3.33 ERA through 18 games and has a save and 35 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched.

• Cole Gilley started for the Threshers on Sunday as they defeated the Mighty Mussels 6-2. He started and went four innings allowing two hits, a run and a walk while striking out four. Gilley is now 5-1 with a 3.35 ERA through 14 games, one of which he’s started, and has 34 strikeouts in 37.3 innings pitched.

• Connor Fenlong is back in the minors as the former Sycamore right handed pitcher signed a deal with the Detroit Tigers organization this year. He’s played in two games for the Class A Lakeland Flying Tigers, both starts, and he has a 0.96 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 9.1 innings pitched since getting on the mound at the end of June.

• Simon Gregersen got the loss for the Class A Visalia Rawhide on Sunday as they fell 3-1 to the Inland Empire 66ers. He started and went five innings allowing five hits and three runs while striking out five. Gregersen is now 1-2 with a 4.67 ERA through 11 games, four of which he’s started, and has 30 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched.

• Jared Spencer continues to sit on the injured list for the Florida Complex League Blue Jays as he aims to work his way back after an injury in his final collegiate season back in 2025 with the University of Texas.
