Rex Ryan makes an appearance at Jets mandatory minicamp

Some figures never completely disappear from a franchise’s story. For the New York Jets, Rex Ryan remains one of those.

The former Jets head coach was spotted at the team’s first mandatory minicamp practice this week, returning to Florham Park more than a decade after leading one of the most memorable eras in recent franchise history. Dressed in Jets gear and observing practice, his appearance quickly generated attention among fans who still associate him with the organization’s most successful stretch of football in the 21st century.

His visit also served as a reminder of a reality Jets fans know all too well. Ryan remains the last head coach to guide the franchise to the postseason.

Ryan’s visit to New Jersey makes sense on another level, too. His son, Seth Ryan, is a member of the team’s coaching staff.

Ryan’s tenure with the Jets lasted from 2009 through 2014 and included some of the most successful seasons the organization has experienced in recent memory. After arriving from the Baltimore Ravens, where he built a reputation as one of football’s premier defensive minds, Ryan immediately transformed the Jets into contenders.

New York reached consecutive AFC Championship Games during his first two seasons and became known for its aggressive defense, confident personality, and willingness to embrace the spotlight.

His connection to the organization has never completely faded. He interviewed for the Jets’ head-coaching vacancy during the 2025 hiring cycle. At the time, he publicly expressed confidence that he would land the position before the organization ultimately hired Aaron Glenn.

Jets Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 2026 offseason.
