Why Caitlin Clark got an eighth technical foul. Fever have appealed, hoping to avoid suspension
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Fever wasted no time in appealing Caitlin Clark’s eighth technical foul of the season — one that, if upheld, means she will be suspended for the Fever’s game Tuesday against the New York Liberty.

Typically, teams need to wait for a memo, which usually comes a day or two after a game, detailing the calls and fines from a game in order to appeal a technical foul. But that isn’t necessarily a formal process.

And Fever GM Amber Cox expedited that process by sending an appeal before Fever players made it to the media room for the postgame news conference.

“It’s already appealed,” Clark said. “… I just hope the league makes the right decision, and hopefully I can play on Tuesday.”

Clark picked up the tech after she was bumped out of bounds on the baseline by Sky guard Natasha Cloud, then proceeded to run into official Genesis Perrymond. Perrymond took a couple steps back from the contact, then called Clark for a tech.

Clark couldn’t believe it at first, throwing up her hands and saying “for what” incredulously.

“(We were told) she intentionally seeked out the official,” Fever coach Stephanie White said.

White picked up a technical from official Agon Abazi while Sky guard Rachel Banham was shooting the technical free throw for fighting with the officials — a decision she doesn’t agree with, either.

“My tech was for saying ‘That’s bullshit,’” White said. “Even though I was hearing the f-bomb the whole (expletive) game. My tech was saying ‘That’s bullshit.’ Like, that’s a bad call. That’s a bad call. Incidental contact when you’re flying out of control, and I thought (the other officials) should have come up and talked to her about it as well.

“That shit happens all the time in the game, you know, officials have to have some awareness in those moments, and it didn’t happen.”

The Fever have appealed two of Clark’s technical fouls already this season, and both of them were unsuccessful. Of the 162 technical fouls called this season throughout the league, only five have been rescinded.
