The agent of Real Madrid target Enzo Fernandez – Javier Pastore – revealed to MARCA that they are seeking ways to leave Chelsea.
“Today the player is calmly thinking about the Argentina national team,” Pastore said. “He’s playing in a World Cup, he’s very close to going through to the round of 16… He’s thinking only about that and we are looking at possibilities to leave Chelsea, but there is nothing firm or confirmed at any club.”
Fernandez has already been punished by Chelsea for saying that he’d like to live in Madrid. This was offered as a way of talking about the Spanish capital on the whole, but it has been widely interpreted as flirting with 15-time Champions League winners Los Blancos.
“He has many friends there, and he is very good friends with Julian Alvarez, and at the end of the day, all the time they can spend together they are together there,” Pastore protested.
“And I also live in Madrid. Every time he traveled, he traveled to see me and to fix work things, but aside from that: who doesn’t like Madrid? I didn’t play in Madrid, but even I live there”.
Paris Saint-Germain legend Pastore was asked whether he believes Fernandez performs better as a pivot defensive midfielder or interior.
“Enzo has changed his position a lot in recent years. He has played very much at the base or as a midfielder arriving in the area. Here in the national team he starts at the base but in the end he is the only midfielder who reaches the attacking line and is close to Lionel Messi. He is a player who adapts very well to any type of position,” Pastore stated.
On Friday, defending champions Argentina continue their bid to retain the FIFA World Cup by facing Cabo Verde in the last 32.
Real Madrid knows what it will take to land Fernandez
According to BBC Sport, Chelsea will accept $160 million (£120 million) for Fernandez after recently selling ex-FC Barcelona youth product Marc Cucurella to Madrid for $69 million (£51.8 million).
President Florentino Perez has shown that he has this kind of money after previously bidding $171 million (€150 million) for Alvarez. Yet Real Madrid is in far greater need of a midfielder such as Fernandez than another attacker, after two trophyless seasons where bite was lacking in the center of the park.
