Player Profile: New Eagles WR Dontayvion Wicks and his 2026 outlook

When the Philadelphia Eagles sent a pair of late-round draft picks to Green Bay in exchange for receiver Dontayvion Wicks, it wasn’t considered a flashy trade. But for a franchise looking to reshape its receiver room, Wicks’ role may be larger than anticipated.

The Packers selected Wicks in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and he wasted little time making an impact. As a rookie, Wicks hauled in 39 catches for 581 yards and four touchdowns while flashing the speed and cutting ability that scouts raved about. His role fluctuated over the next few years in a crowded receiver room that included Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and first-round pick Matthew Golden.

Wicks never topped 54% of the offensive snaps in any of his three seasons in Green Bay, and his numbers dipped to a career-low 30 catches for 332 yards in 2025, a decline that made a change of scenery plausible for both sides. On April 10th, the Packers traded Wicks to the Eagles in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick. Philadelphia also signed Wicks to a one-year contract extension worth $12.5 million, with $9 million fully guaranteed.

Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman spoke glowingly of the pickup, noting that Philadelphia’s front office had tracked Wicks for some time.

“Tay’s a player that we’ve followed,” Roseman said this offseason. “Obviously, we’ve played Green Bay a bunch of times. You see his skillset. He is a physical, explosive player at the top of routes. He can play inside or out. He’s a guy we had our eye on here. And bringing in some of these Green Bay guys, some of the hardest parts of our job is the [cohabitation] part, not understanding who the person is. And when you get a chance to bring in some of these new coaches and then talk about some of the players and the skillset and then know how they are in the building, it makes you even more confident when you make that acquisition.”

The move was notable for another reason: it was the third straight offseason in which Roseman traded for a wide receiver before the start of the season, following the additions of Jahan Dotson in 2024 and John Metchie in 2025. Wicks also arrived during the ongoing A.J. Brown trade drama. While the Wicks acquisition wasn’t presented as a direct replacement move, it did give Philadelphia added depth and insurance at the position.

The Eagles’ receiver room has undergone real change entering 2026. With Brown now in New England, Wicks projects as one of Philadelphia’s top three wideouts, alongside DeVonta Smith and first-round pick Makai Lemon. Wicks’ route-running prowess could make him a valuable chain-mover on third downs and in short areas of the field.

Drops were a concern for Wicks early in his career (14 over his three seasons in Green Bay), but he trimmed that number to just two in 2025. Whether he can turn that improved consistency into a featured role remains to be seen. If new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion can unlock the “untapped potential” Roseman referenced, Wicks could quietly become one of the more important complementary pieces of Philadelphia’s passing game in 2026.
