The New York Yankees are continuing their series this week against the Detroit Tigers (on the road). New York dropped the first game of the three-game set with the Tigers 5-3 on Monday evening.

Before the Yankees officially released their lineup against the Tigers on Tuesday, manager Aaron Boone made his weekly appearance on ‘Talkin Yanks’, and Boone revealed shortstop Anthony Volpe’s status for Tuesday’s game.

Anthony Volpe to get pine treatment on Tuesday

The Detroit Tigers are rolling with RHP Casey Mize on Tuesday evening, and assuming for that reason, manager Aaron Boone said that Anthony Volpe will be on the bench for tonight’s game.

Anthony Volpe has actually been hitting well as of late, and CBSSports RotoWire staff wrote (on 6/21):

“The young shortstop extended his hitting streak to eight games, during which he is slashing .478/.571/.652 with five RBI, six runs, a steal and a 5:3 BB:K. Volpe has played only 27 games so far this season, but his 14.9 percent walk rate and 19.8 percent strikeout rate are significant improvements over the 7.4 percent and 25.2 percent marks he logged across 596 regular-season plate appearances last year.”

Volpe is batting .269 this season with one home run, 13 RBI, 6 stolen bases, 16 runs scored, and an OPS+ of 111 in 93 at-bats this season. It appears that Volpe’s job may be safe for now, and he could be fully recovered from offseason labrum surgery.
