The Pittsburgh Steelers made a move to bolster their secondary on Tuesday.

Pittsburgh announced the team has signed veteran safety Darnell Savage to a one-year, $1.5 million deal. Savage was selected with the 21st overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers and has been a solid NFL player for years.

Savage has appeared in 97 career games, making 83 starts. After five years with the Packers, he signed a three-year, $21.75 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars, which included $12.5 million guaranteed.

However, after just one full season, the Jaguars released Savage in mid-September in the second year of the three-year deal. He then signed with the Washington Commanders before requesting his release and ended last season with the Buffalo Bills.

Savage’s best season came in 2020 when he started all 15 games with the Packers as he recorded 75 tackles, 12 pass defenses, and four interceptions.

Savage joins a Steelers safety room that features DeShon Elliott, Jaquan Brisker, Sebastian Castro, Robert Jennings-Spears, and Jack Henderson.

In the corresponding move, the Steelers waived defensive back Makari Paige. The former Michigan Wolverines safety went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft and spent time with the New York Giants during the offseason. He signed with the Steelers in May.
