Bill Belichick Attends 2026 Stanley Cup Final Game 1 in Raleigh as Personal Guest of NHL Commissioner Bettman

The 2026 Stanley Cup Final began Tuesday night at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, with the Carolina Hurricanes facing the Vegas Golden Knights. The crowd was loud, the stakes were enormous, and the seats inside the arena drew notable faces well beyond hockey.
The Hurricanes reached the Final after losing only one game throughout the postseason. The Hurricanes beat the Montreal Canadiens in five games in the Eastern Conference Final before reaching the championship round. Meanwhile, Bill Belichick is in his second season as head football coach at the University of North Carolina, making the state his professional home for the first time after 24 seasons with the New England Patriots.
On Tuesday night, two sports worlds briefly collided in one camera shot.SportsCenter shared a clip showing Belichick and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman sitting together and chatting during the first period.
Belichick attended the game as a personal guest of Bettman. Belichick sat in Bettman’s box for the duration of Game 1, alongside Duke men’s basketball coach Jon Scheyer and NC State basketball coach Justin Gainey, who was spotted outside the arena with fans before puck drop.
The pairing drew immediate online attention because it looked so unexpected. Belichick had previously attended a Boston Bruins playoff game during his Patriots tenure, so hockey has long been on his radar.
The game delivered the kind of electric atmosphere that often attracts fans from other sports. Carolina’s Nikolaj Ehlers scored a breakaway goal 25 seconds into the game, the third-fastest opening goal in Stanley Cup Final history. He scored again less than 13 minutes later to put the Hurricanes ahead 2-0. Vegas, however, rallied. Tomas Hertl scored the go-ahead goal with 3:24 remaining in the third period as the Golden Knights won 5-4 despite trailing twice.

Gary Bettman Used Game 1 to Celebrate Raleigh as a Hockey Market
Bettman’s decision to bring Belichick as his guest carried a specific message for the region. North Carolina is one of the fastest-growing sports markets in the United States. Raleigh’s Lenovo Center sold out every home playoff game this postseason, and the Hurricanes finished the regular season with a 53-22-7 record. Bettman spoke to reporters before puck drop and praised Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon for building a consistent winner in a non-traditional hockey city.
Belichick has become a familiar face in the Raleigh area since he took the head coaching job at North Carolina in December 2024.Belichick’s growing presence in North Carolina, including viral appearances at local events. His five-year, $50 million contract with the Tar Heels ties him to the state through the 2029 season.
His move from NFL head coach to college football has not been smooth. UNC finished 4-8 in its first season, and the program faced off-field controversies throughout the year.Belichick was first hired at North Carolina, with many questioning whether the move made sense for either party. Year two begins in September.
For Bettman, hosting the Stanley Cup Final in Raleigh represents a major milestone in growing hockey in the South. The Hurricanes last appeared in the Stanley Cup Final in 2006, when they defeated the Edmonton Oilers. This is the franchise’s third appearance in its history. The Golden Knights, meanwhile, are chasing their second Cup, having won their first in 2023 in just their sixth season as a franchise.
Game 2 is scheduled for Thursday night in Raleigh.
