LeBron James doesn’t have the New York Knicks on his shortlist of teams he’s considering in free agency, and Jalen Brunson might have something to do with that.

LeBron’s free agency is widely considered to be among the Cavaliers, Warriors, Heat, 76ers, and Timberwolves.

The Knicks likely would’ve led to some real interest from James, but it doesn’t look like reigning Finals MVP Jalen Brunson went to the lengths other stars have to attract James to New York.

Jalen Brunson makes it clear that he will not recruit LeBron James

Brunson spoke on a panel at Fanatics Fest in New York and was asked about recruiting LeBron to New York. The 29-year-old guard made it clear that pitching to free agents isn’t his job with the franchise.

“My job is to put the ball in the hoop. Try and play a little defense. There’s people who are above me who determine who’s on the team and who’s not. I’ll leave the pitching to them”

This is an interesting statement for multiple reasons.

Brunson’s arrival in New York led to the franchise acquiring most of Brunson’s old college teammates, notably paying an outrageous price to land Mikal Bridges.

While Brunson might not have directly influenced those moves, it’s clear that the Knicks were attuned to what he needed to succeed. It paid off wonderfully with the 2026 NBA title.

With a title team already in tow and an elite starting five, it doesn’t look like Brunson will actively try to disrupt that internal dynamic by recruiting James.

He’ll accept it if the organization does it and James joins, but it doesn’t look like Brunson wants to make a pitch, which, if successful, might relegate Hart or Bridges to the bench if James joins.

James’ agent, Rich Paul, openly said LeBron would’ve joined the Knicks if they didn’t win the 2026 championship.

Paul also said that Brunson would need to actively recruit James to make that happen, so it’s clear the Knicks will have to worry about beating LeBron’s next team as they look to retain their NBA title.
