NEW YORK – Today’s split admission Dodgers-Yankees doubleheader takes some of the drama out of the daily question about who’s at shortstop for the Yanks.
It’s Anthony Volpe at short in the opener, with Jose Caballero on the bench to begin Sunday.
Volpe did not start Friday’s game out of the All-Star break and he wasn’t in Saturday’s original lineup, postponed due to rain.
Manager Aaron Boone is still terming it a “day-to-day’’ decision and “a competitive situation.’’
“Really just going day by day with no mind made up for who’s playing (when),’’ said Boone, adding that a lefty starter changes the equation, likely meaning starts for Volpe at shortstop and at another position for Caballero.
Boone says both players have “a very team first attitude’’ about the situation.
And there is the looming presence of top prospect George Lombard Jr., who could be called up during this second half.
“No secret how highly we feel of George,’’ said Boone, adding that, with his continued development is “pushing himself into the conversation.’’
It’s the start of a long Sunday at Yankee Stadium, with a terrific early matchup – the Dodgers’ Yoshinobu Yamamoto vs. Cam Schlittler. Neither team has listed a starter for the nightcap.
The first game is scheduled for 12:35 p.m., and the second game is set for 7:20 p.m.
