Today is game 100 on the 2026 season. With that in mind, it got me thinking what was happening in “Twins” history exactly a century ago. A complete dart throw–but one that hit an interesting bullseye!
On July 19, 1926, the Washington Senators–who of course became our Twins in 1961–were hosting the Cleveland Indians at Griffith Stadium. On the mound for the Nats: Firpo Marberry. In and of itself this was interesting, as Firpo led the American League in saves (22) that year and completed 47 ballgames. This was one of only five GS for Marberry all season.
Things didn’t look good from the jump. In T1, CLE’s George Burns (presumably not the comedian) produced a fielder’s choice that scored Freddy Spurgeon when WAS third baseman Ossie Bluege committed an error on the play. Joe Sewell would then fly out to LF for what looked to be an easy sac fly RBI–until “Talk To Me” Goose Goslin hosed the legendary Tris Speaker at home plate!
Given a reprieve, Firpo buckled down and put up a string of goose eggs on the line score. In B6, the Senators offense finally helped out: After a Sam Rice double, Goslin would eventually drive him home with a sac fly to tie things at one run apiece.
Then the floodgates opened: four straight singles—including RBI from Muddy Ruel & even Marberry himself!—put WAS on top by a 4-1 margin.
The last threat the Indians mounted against Marberry came in T8 when Glenn Myatt tripled. But in a moment of redemption, Bluege would gun him down at the plate one batter later on a failed CLE contact play.
Your Final: Washington Senators 4, Cleveland Indians 1. Marberry’s line: 9 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 5 BB, 2 K.
That’s about all we’ll be hearing from the ‘26 Senators this summer. Why? Well, after two consecutive World Series appearances in ‘24 (win) & ‘25 (loss), WAS slipped to 81-69-2 in ‘26, fourth in the AL.
Though Baseball-Reference.com lists no attendance for the 7/19/1926 contest, I’m guessing it will be substantially beaten by today’s Wrigley crew. But the reported game length of 1:51 will be tough to match!
