England fans belted out Wonderwall to salute their team's 2-1 victory over DR Congo

The Britpop surge of the 1990s left an indelible impact on music and culture across the globe. Incredibly, it continues to reverberate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

That’s because England fans have embraced the music that made up the soundtrack to much of their youth. Oasis has long been celebrated as one of the more influential bands of the 1990s, even if Be Here Now is, hooooo buddy, a tough listen. The Gallagher brothers’ songs have woven themselves into the fabric of pop culture. It’s long been a stereotype for one guy at the party to ruin things by finding a guitar and strumming out the opening chords to Wonderwall.

But unleashing Wonderwall in the right environment can be downright moving. Like after Harry Kane finds the back of the net twice in the second half to spark a comeback win for the Three Lions against the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Awesome. This isn’t the first time it’s happened at the 2026 World Cup. They also sang to celebrate a 4-2 win over Croatia:

And again after clinching Group L to set up Wednesday’s showdown with DR Congo:

Bringing Oasis back to the spotlight isn’t just a celebratory exercise. England fans serenaded their team after a heartbreaking loss to Croatia in 2018.

Or in tribute to the victims of terrorist attacks in 2017.

It may or may not be coming home in 2026. However, one thing is for certain. England’s singing game far exceeds America’s when it comes to sports.
