Does Texas A&M have the most delusional fanbase in college football?

With the sheer volume of people interacting on social media, grabbing attention has become an art form. Depending on the post, creators use different tactics. Vague headlines for article clicks, or more commonly, rage‑bait and engagement‑bait posts designed to spark arguments and keep the replies flowing.

Outside of the eternal “Who’s the GOAT: Michael Jordan or LeBron James?” debate, few groups on social media are more passionate or more reliably active than Texas A&M fans. Narrow it down even further, and Aggie football fans sit in a league of their own.

On X, especially, accounts that live and die by engagement have figured this out, and they’ve learned to weaponize it. One of the easiest ways? Insert Texas A&M into a top‑ten list, no matter how flimsy the premise.

Rival fans know this. Several Texas Longhorns accounts spend more time posting about A&M than their own team because they know Aggies will show up in the replies. But it’s not just rivals anymore. Even general sports accounts with no real connection to A&M have started tossing the Aggies into random rankings simply to stir the pot. The “Top 10 Most Delusional Fanbases” list making the rounds this week is a perfect example.

Anyone who actually follows Aggie football knows the joke doesn’t land. If anything, A&M fans are famous for expecting the bottom to fall out. The memes are endless: the cycle of hope → belief → disappointment. The most well‑known version even has a name, Battered Aggie Syndrome, or BAS, a tongue‑in‑cheek acknowledgment of how quickly optimism can turn into dread.

But to be fair, there is another side to this. Texas A&M’s fan base is among the most loyal in the country, and the traditions that define the program are so distinctive that outsiders often label the culture a “cult.” That level of devotion can sometimes blur reality, especially now that Mike Elko has injected legitimate optimism into the program just two years into his tenure. Add in the national media personalities who consistently hype A&M’s potential, and it’s easy to see why fans feel hopeful.

There’s a thin line between passion and delusion, and Aggie fans walk that line more than most. But that’s exactly why they’re such an easy target for engagement‑bait posts. Because they care, because they show up, and because they’ll always defend their program, even when they’re bracing for the next gut punch.

And on social media, caring loudly is all the algorithm needs.
