The National League Central will be one of the more interesting divisions to watch at this year’s trade deadline, with some suggesting that nearly every team in the division could be buyers.
Sticking with the two contenders from the division, at least with what many people expect in the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers, there’s reason to believe both of them could be interested in similar players.
The Cubs, who have been extremely disappointing, need to do more than Milwaukee does. If history suggests anything, it’s that Milwaukee won’t be too aggressive at this year’s deadline, though it’s certainly possible that could change, given that it understands it has a chance to really win this season.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, those two teams could be battling it out for a potential trade for Sandy Alcantara, who many consider one of the more intriguing right-handers in baseball, with others thinking that he isn’t anything that he once was.
“Teams are far more bullish on Alcantara this deadline than they were last time around, when the gap between the Marlins’ ask and others’ willingness to give up significant talent was too large to bridge. With just this year and a club option for less than the qualifying offer remaining, the 30-year-old Alcantara throws hard, eats innings and induces ground balls,” Jeff Passan wrote.
It’s almost impossible to get a feel for what Alcantara is at this stage of his career. I hate saying this, since he’s still relatively young, but it’s evident that those injuries have had a major impact on how he looks now.
That’s one thing the Cubs and Brewers will have to consider this trade deadline, though the low price could make them both interested if that’s how things unfold.
