Long before they were UFC champions and standalone headliners, Conor McGregor and Max Holloway were just a couple of up-and-coming prospects fighting on FOX Sports 1. “Notorious” was fresh off his UFC debut win over Marcus Brimage on Fuel TV, while Holloway — already a five-fight veteran of the Octagon — was looking to rebound from a split decision loss to Dennis Bermudez at UFC 160.

McGregor used four takedowns to rack up more than six minutes of control time against Holloway during their Aug. 17, 2013 showdown, a bout that only saw 32 strikes from the Hawaiian. McGregor also left that contest with a blown ACL and would not return until the following July, where he wrecked Diego Brandao in Ireland.

“This guy has got a win over me when we were kids in a ‘Fight Night’ show — I think the main event was Sonnen and Shogun Rua,” Holloway said back in 2017. “I don’t know if the two of them are in the UFC anymore. You know me and him made 12K that night and I think he’s happy to hold onto that. That’s the kind of person he is. Look at what I did. I fought someone who people consider and who I consider the greatest of all time. I gave him his straight rematch. I didn’t care. If you want to be the best you’ve got the beat the best, and the best is ‘Blessed,’ baby.”

The only other fighter from that card who is still with UFC is Michael Johnson.

McGregor and Holloway will finally rematch atop the UFC 329 fight card this weekend (Sat., July 11, 2026) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
