The Boston Celtics tried trading Jaylen Brown for Giannis Antetokounmpo, and now that they did not win that sweepstakes, they are reportedly taking calls from other teams on Brown.

On Tuesday, Brad Stevens could have come out and said he envisions Brown being with the Celtics for a long time to come, like he has done in the past, but instead, he left the door open for a trade.

“Jaylen Brown is a big part of us,” Stevens said. “I’m never going to predict the future, but … the one thing I want to make very clear is how valued he’s always been. He’s been amazing. He’s been an amazing teammate. Great person to be around. Whether that run ends 10 years from now when he retires or before, there’s a lot to celebrate. We have a great relationship and an open relationship where we talk about everything. But I don’t want to predict the future. But I look at it as, ‘This is our team.’”

The Celtics have reportedly made Brown available in trade talks twice now, and both instances came when they were trying to acquire a future Hall of Famer. They offered him up for Antetokounmpo and for Kevin Durant in 2022. They won’t just trade him for anybody, and Shams Charania’s latest report revealed the monumental asking price for Brown.

“Each day this week, the Boston Celtics have been actively engaged in trade conversations around Jaylen Brown with multiple interested teams,” Charania said on “Get Up” on Friday. “We know they went after Giannis. They offered Jaylen Brown and two unprotected first-round picks. They missed out on Giannis. He went to Miami. Now, they’re left to pick up the pieces and deal with the fallout. There’s been some hard conversations, so where does this go from here? We know they tried to get Giannis, but what’s the ask now? My understanding is that in some cases, the Celtics have asked teams for four first-round picks.”

Trading Brown without getting a superstar to pair with Tatum would certainly hurt Boston’s contention chances. The problem is, there are no real stars still available that the Celtics may deem worthy of trading Brown for. If reports of them being willing to trade him for just picks are true, it could be that the relationship is fractured, and they need to trade him.
