Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is no stranger to the spotlight dating back to his college days at USC. He also isn’t a stranger to criticism and haters that he’s earned along the way.
Williams has quickly become one of the faces of the NFL following a breakout sophomore campaign where he set a franchise single-season passing yards record and set a league record with seven fourth-quarter comebacks (including the postseason). But it’s been his improbable throws and Houdini-esque escapability that has made him one of the most dangerous QBs in the NFL. In fact, it’s a big reason why Williams was chosen to grace the cover of “NFL Madden 27.”
But Williams has come under plenty of criticism, both fair and unfair, whether it’s about his personal life or on-field play. While the former No. 1 overall pick doesn’t need the extra motivation, he admitted that the haters can be an extra boost with his confidence.
“Yeah, I love them. It’s one of my favorite things,” Williams said in an interview with the Pardon My Take podcast. “I don’t need them, but it’s always a little extra belief in myself, a little extra confidence in myself. It’s a little more delusion that I add to myself. It’s all these things combined and it just throws a little bit of gas on the fire, and all you need is a little bit.”
From the moment Williams arrived in Chicago, he embraced the significance of leading the NFL’s charter franchise and the ultimate goal of delivering a Super Bowl back to the Bears. No moment has been too big for him, and it’s clear that head coach Ben Johnson has just scratched the surface in one season.
If Williams can take another step forward in his development, he’ll establish himself as one of the league’s best and take his team one step closer to a championship. And the haters are welcome to give him an added push along the way.
