EG's Nelson leads Avengers to Game 1 win in D-II baseball series

Anders Nelson has the top-seeded Avengers one victory away from a Division II championship after the East Greenwich starter struck out 10 and allowed a single run in Saturday’s win over West Warwick. He also delivered a key hit in Game 1 at Rhode Island College.
With the 6-1 victory, East Greenwich will look to close out the No. 2 seeded Wizards in this best-of-three title series on Sunday afternoon.
West Warwick scored first, plating its only run in the top of the second inning when Charles Brown’s single drove in Kole Kilduff.
But the Avengers answered in a hurry, scoring four times in the bottom of the inning when Nelson hit a bases-loaded double to bring in two runs, and two more came home when a ground ball off the bat of Tyler Nuti was mishandled. Nuti led the team with three RBIs and Nelson had a pair.
Miles Doman and Nolan Colucci and Nelson each collected two hits in the win. Aayan Modi pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief to close out the victory.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
