Kylian Mbappé might be the shining star for France, but every Batman needs his Robin.

During the high-octane World Cup third-place match against England on Saturday, July 18, Michael Olise broke the record for most assists in a World Cup.

The Bayern Munich midfielder notched two assists in the fixture, both aiding goals for Mbappé. This brings his total to seven assists in the 2026 World Cup, the most in a single tournament.

Olise’s name now stands above a very important figure in football: Pelé. The Brazil legend had six assists in the 1970 World Cup where the Seleção won the tournament by beating Italy 4-1 in the final.

Mbappé made history himself with his two goals. After the 6-4 loss to England, his World Cup scoring total ends at 10 goals, two ahead of Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race. The Argentinian star plays against Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday, July 19 to try to best the French striker. Mbappé took the record, if temporarily, of most World Cup goals all time from Messi and now has 22 total.

The match also served as a farewell for France manager Didier Deschamps who won the World Cup as a player in 1998 and led the team to the title in 2018.
