3 Steelers position battles fans can't ignore at training camp

Training camp is almost upon us, with many exciting Pittsburgh Steelers storylines to watch closely at Latrobe this summer. And there’s nothing more thrilling than a few Black and Gold positional battles.

From a competition between quarterbacks to a pair of formerly undrafted running backs looking to cement their spot as the top rusher, here are three positional battles fans should watch closely at training camp in 2026.

QB2: Mason Rudolph vs. Will Howard

Rudolph and Howard aren’t just competing to be Aaron Rodgers’ backup, as it almost goes without saying that the loser of this positional battle will earn a one-way ticket off the team.

WR3: Roman Wilson vs. Germie Bernard

DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. have the WR1 and WR2 spots shored up, leaving Wilson or Bernard as the third receiver. Momentum may favor the rookie Bernard, however, as he’s heading into 2026 with a lot of buzz, while Wilson hasn’t made an impact through his first two seasons.

RB1: Jaylen Warren vs. Rico Dowdle

This competition almost feels like a case of 1A vs. 1B, with both Warren and Dowdle expected to play big roles in 2026. Still, neither running back wants to be second fiddle in the new Mike McCarthy-led offense, and training camp will be their opportunity to prove who wants it more.
