Spain’s national soccer team manager Luis de la Fuente had a hilarious reaction to players vowing to get tattoos of his face on their bodies if they won the World Cup.
The team defeated Argentina in the final game on Sunday, July 19, and at a press conference afterward, de la Fuente was asked about the tattoo promise.
“At one point, [Marc] Cucurella said that if he became a champion, he would get your face tattooed,” a reporter asked, per a translation via BBC Sport. “But he says he doesn’t know which part of the body he could have your face tattooed on. Some players also said they would get your face tattooed if they became champions. What do you make of that? Which part of the body would you recommend for the tattoo?”
De la Fuente laughed and joked that while he’s “not at the age to get tattoos,” the team “made a mistake.”
“They’re serious people so they’ll keep their word,” he continued. ”I’ve already told them, ‘Did you make a mistake?’ They did, but they’ll enjoy it.”
As for the possible tattoo placement, the coach offered, “I’m not so terribly ugly that they’ll need to put it somewhere where nobody can see it. But it makes me laugh, and I’m proud that they keep their promises.”
Spain won against Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday, July 19, with the men securing their first win in the tournament since 2010.

The match remained scoreless through regulation until forward Ferran Torres got past star Argentinian goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez in the 106th minute in overtime for a score of 1-0.

“All finals are difficult, and when you have [Lionel] Messi in the other team, there is always some nervousness. But in the end we have always relied on ourselves, on our game, and we showed that again today,” Torres, 26, said, according to the Associated Press.
De la Fuente, who refers to the squad as a “family,” encouraged the players to embrace the team’s legacy.
“I’ll tell them that this is a unique stage, the kind of moment that may never be repeated again, and that we have to be ourselves,” the manager told The Guardian before the semifinals clash against France. “We’re facing one of the best lineups in the world, but we’re the best team in the world.”
