England manager Thomas Tuchel has ‘no regrets’ after semi-final loss leads to World Cup exit
England’s Thomas Tuchel is headed back home with his squad knowing that they left it all on the field after losing 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final.
Argentina will advance to their third World Cup Finals in four editions, with the chance to become the first team in 64 years to successfully defend the biggest prize in world football.
Despite losing in the semi-finals for the second time in three editions, England and new manager Thomas Tuchel are going home with a silver lining.

In his post-match interview, Tuchel made it clear that this English squad had nothing to regret after this loss because of the quality they showed throughout the tournament and the intensity they brought to this game/
“Disappointed. We were so close, but we got so passive after we scored… In the moment, no regrets, the team gave everything, and we were very, very close.”
“We deserved to be up one-nil. We played one of our better matches, maybe the best match. The team was top, but we couldn’t bring it over the line. No regrets.”
Tuchel will be under tactical scrutiny after England threw away their 1-0 advantage by playing a defensive style of football that had been incongruent to England’s style this entire tournament.
Unfortunately, Argentina’s relentless attack kept breaking the English defense down until Lautaro Martinez sealed their fate with a stoppage-time winner.
The only regret Tuchel could have from this game is not forcing his players to continue playing with offensive intensity to keep Argentina uncomfortable.
Their defensive style of play gave Argentina the passive openings they needed to make an impact, and now they’re headed to the World Cup final while England is headed home.
Tuchel might have some regrets about how this tournament played out, especially with the form he had gotten his team in. While they’ll hope they keep that intensity alive for the third-place game, motivation will be hard to come by in the wake of having already failed at their ultimate goal.
