Browns' DC Mike Rutenberg and LB Quincy Williams Reunite in Cleveland

Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg, maybe for the first time ever, set speachless after rewatching Quincy Williams speak about what he means to him.
In an interview with internet personality and NFL Insider Ari Meirov that is 50 straight minutes of straight Browns talk, Meirov played Williams’ introductory press conference, and Rutenberg couldn’t hold his smile back. Williams talked about how important Rutenberg is to him and why his approach has been so good for Williams.
“Before we talk about football, the biggest thing that (Rutenberg) cares about is my heart. What I do off the field affects what I do on the field, so he wanted to tackle both things… On the field, as long as you take care of yourself off the field, on the field should be easy!”
Rutenberg couldn’t help but smile watching it because Williams is truly one of the great stories in the entire NFL. He is a self-made All-Pro who experienced the worst and continued to fight for it.

Now entering his eighth season in the NFL, he was signed by Cleveland to be the focal point of the Browns’ defense next to future All-Pro Carson Schwesinger. Under Rutenberg, he should be unlocked.
What to expect for the Browns’ defense with Williams at the center of it under Rutenberg
Williams had the best seasons in his career in Rutenberg’s defense. It was likely a combination of what Williams said about his coach and how he treated him off the field, but also how he deployed him on it.
Williams ‘ superpower is his ability to run from sideline to sideline and defend all 53 and a third yards on a football field. Rutenberg was the linebacker’s coach for the Jets from 2021-2024 in which Williams never had fewer than 73 tackles.
In 2023, Williams earned All-Pro honors after he became one of six players since 2015 to record at least 100 tackles (139), 10 tackles for loss (15) and 10 passes defensed (10) in a season.
In Williams’ final season in New York without Rutenberg in 2024, it was lost due to injury and not seeing eye to eye with the new defensive staff. It was time to part ways, and Williams came right back to where he found the most success, under Rutenberg.
The Browns’ linebacker room has been a pretty wild case study. Had they not lost Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah to a broken neck, they would have arguably had two of the best linebackers in the entire NFL. Instead, they are having to catch lightning in a bottle with Williams.
It is a match made in Heaven, and if it comes to fruition, the Browns’ defense has a chance to be very solid in 2026.
