2027 Five-star Demarcus Henry names UNC in top 8 schools

Charlotte native and five-star 2027 prospect Demarcus Henry is in the process of narrowing down his college options, and now he is down to eight schools. Thankfully, UNC was named among his top eight schools, which means Michael Malone is getting closer to potentially landing his first major recruit since accepting the head coaching job this spring.
Henry is a 6’7, 190-lb small forward that currently plays for Compass Prep in Chandler, Arizona, but he is a Charlotte native. He is currently ranked as the best small forward in the 247Sports Composite rankings, and is the fifth best player overall. Aside from UNC, the other schools that Henry named in his top eight according to On3 are Arkansas, BYU, Kentucky, Kansas, UConn, Ohio State, and Louisville.
Here is where Michael Malone’s resume will be put to the ultimate test: Henry has laid out his criteria for the school that he ultimately chooses, and he is what he is looking for per Joe Tipton:
“What I’m looking for in school is someone that just pushes me to be better. Help me grow into the person I know I can be and someone who will help me reach my potential. I want to play for a coach that will hold me accountable and help me make me uncomfortable and keep growing and keep getting better and just help me reach the NBA, which is my ultimate goal.”
A top-five prospect mentioning that he wants to play for a coach that will help them reach the NBA is far from a surprise, but UNC has never had a coach that came from the NBA before. Additionally, Malone has been known as a coach that will hold players accountable and has no problem making players feel uncomfortable, so this seems like it should be a slam dunk. But the tricky thing is that John Calipari, Bill Self, and Dan Hurley all have resumes that would suit Henry as well, and of course, they actually have experience getting players from Point A (college) to Point B (NBA). Malone won’t have enough time to provide proof of concept by the time Henry decides, but perhaps his knowledge/skills from his time in The Association will be enough.
At this moment, we do not know when Henry plans to make his decision. It’s also worth noting that Malone’s recruiting board is stacked — all 10 of UNC’s prospects are top 15 players in the 2027 class, so he is truly swinging for the fences in hopes of putting together an elite roster for the 2027-28 season. Will it pay off, though? We will see what happens between now and next spring.
