WWE SmackDown Results, Winners And Grades As Sami Zayn Beats CM Punk In Mexico City

WWE SmackDown from Mexico City advertised four title matches on a WWE supershow featuring almost every top star on the brand. AAA Cruiserweight champion Rey Fenix is set to defend his championship against Ricky Saints, while Chelsea Green defends the Interim WWE Women’s Championship for the first time against Nia Jax.

The War Raiders defend the AAA Tag Team Championships against R-Truth and Damian Priest, with Truth set on heel alert amid Priest’s desires reenter the singles division this fall.

WWE SmackDown’s main event pits WWE Undisputed champion CM Punk against Sami Zayn for the WWE Championship. Last week’s broadcast of SmackDown garnered 1.3 million amid another Nielsen change that has inflated pro wrestling ratings.

Randy Orton Kicks Off WWE SmackDown In Mexico City

• Fans in Mexico City chanted wildly for the heel Randy Orton while booing Randy Orton. Orton tried talking about how good of a man, husband and friend Cody Rhodes is, and it only resulted in more boos.
• Orton said it takes a lot to put down a legend and he knows from experience. Orton said Cody Rhodes’ soul is not for sale. “Cody Rhodes is no killer, but I am,” said Randy as fans cheered.
• Orton ended the promo by warning whoever wins the main event tonight between WWE champion CM Punk and Sami Zayn: “I’m coming for you.”

Rey Fenix Def. Ricky Saints

• Fans went wild for Rey Fenix and booed Ricky Saints heavily. Fenix got off the blocks quickly with a nifty rollup for a nearfall. Fenix was booted out of the ring while swinging between the top two ropes. Starks followed up with a Revolution DDT and posed for the crowd, who booed vociferously.
• Saints dominated Fenix throughout the break, but Rey came back with an Adios Amigo followed by a dive to the outside. Fenix scored a nearfall with a frog splash crossbody. Saints caught a diving Rey Fenix and countered with a powerbomb. Saints hit another Revolution DDT for a two-count.
• Fenix hit a handspring stunner for a very close nearfall. Saints sold the move perfectly, basically doing a front flip. Fenix finished off Saints with a MMB. After the match, Rey’s show of respect was declined by Ricky.

Match Grade: B+

Nikki Bella Def. Paige

• Paige wasted no time hitting the ring and attacking Nikki Bella. Both Nikki and Paige got babyface reactions for their entrances, but fans backed Paige once the bell rang.
• Paige kept the pressure on Paige as the action spilled outside the ring. Back in the ring, Nikki rolled up Paige and put her feet on the rope for the win.

Match Grade: C

Trick Williams Appears Live

• Fans chanted “Quinones” in honor of Mexican soccer superstar Julian Qunones. Trick was gifted with a soccer ball from a fan on his way to the ring, which received a huge pop. Trick kicked the ball into the crowd.
• Trick Williams introduced Lil Yachty, but it took two attempts. Trick introduced Yachty as the “Five Minute Man” and the “Greatest Man Alive” on his second attempt. Still no Yachty. Instead, Baron Corbin dragged the carcass of Lil Yachty out to the arena.
• Trick Williams chased Baron Corbin off before returning to Yachty’s side with WWE officials. Baron returned with a trick stick and whacked Trick. Fans booed Baron as he celebrated. Huge heat for Corbin, who basked in the infamous culero chant.

Chelsea Green Def. Nia Jax

• Chelsea Green donned the colors of Mexico while her BFF (Best Friend for Now) cornered her, carrying the flag of Mexico. Nia Jax wore the colors of the American flag and was booed for it in early September.
• Fans chanted for Chelsea, but Nia Jax dominated the opening moments of the match. Fans rallied behind Chelsea as Nia Jax bounced her head from pillar to post. Chelsea launched a brief comeback that was cutoff by a Uranage. Now back in control, Nia hit a senton splash for a nearfall.
• Jax trapped Green in a suspended rear-naked choke from the top rope, shades of Brody King’s signature move. Jax tore at the protective match of the champion, who countered with a desperation kick. Another Chelsea comeback was cutoff by Jax, this time with a Samoan Drop.
• Mexico City continued to chant for Chelsea as Nia Jax removed her mask. On the outside, Lash Legend went for a big right hand on Chelsea, but Tiffany Stratton took the bullet. Jax laid Green back in the ring, but she missed an Annihilator. Chelsea put her mask back on and hit a headbutt on Nia. Green finished Nia with a top-rope Unpretty-her for the win.

Match Grade: B

The War Raiders Def. R-Truth And Damian Priest, Who Turned Heel

• Fans chanted for R-Truth as he was mauled by the War Raiders early. Truth made a brief comeback before securing the hot tag to Damian Priest. Priest ran around the ring and used the steel steps to hit a step-up diving crossbody on the War Raiders.
• WWE SmackDown returned from commercial just in time for a vintage comeback from R-Truth, who it his signature Five Moves of Doom punctuated by the Five Knuckle Shuffle.
• The War Raiders overpowered Truth, with Priest detained, and hit the Ragnarok for the win. A “clearly disappointed” Damian Priest steamed in the ring and helped R-Truth to his feet. Priest put a sombrero on Truth’s head and then knocked his block off with a clothesline. Priest stuck Truth with a South of Heaven. Fans chanted “culero” asa Priest officially reentered the singles division as a heel.

Sami Zayn Def. CM Punk For The WWE Championship

• CM Punk walked out dressed in Mexico-inspired gear. Sami Zayn was also wearing red, white and green, but in a Syrian way. The main event kicked off with 15 minutes left in the show. Punk tweaked his knee early on in the matchup, and Sami Zayn exploited it.
• Punk battled back and exploited Zayn’s wrist injury, tearing at the padding to get even. Sami fought out of Punk’s assault, and trapped Punk in a Figure 4 leg lock. Punk broke the hold and battled back, with both Punk and Zayn selling their respective injuries.
• The climactic back-and-forth punches occurred during a final commercial break. Punk got the better of Zayn and made the slow climb to the top rope. Punk took too much time and Sami cut him off.
• Sami hit a Blue Thunder Bomb for a nearfall. Sami hit an Exploder suplex in the corner. Punk cut off Zayn as he charged in for the Helluva Kick. Punk hit a GTS for a nearfall. Johnny Gargano hit the ring, looking to cash in on a bribe from Sami that if Sami wins, Gargano is his first challenger.
• Punk hit a GTS behind the referee’s back as Candice LeRae distracted Dan Engler. Punk had a visual three count. Punk stuck Gargano with a GTS. Owens hit the ring and accidentally drilled Punk with the WWE Championship belt. Sami low-blowed Owens, hit the Helluva Kick and won his second WWE title. Sweet revenge, and justice for Sami.

Match Grade: B+
