Wanyonyi sets 1,000m world record in Monaco

Kenyan runner Emmanuel Wanyonyi set a world record over 1,000 metres at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco, crossing the line in 2 minutes 11.83 seconds on Friday.

It is a non-Olympic distance but the 21-year-old was 0.13 seconds faster than his compatriot Noah Ngeny, who in 1999 broke Sebastian Coe’s then 18-year-old world record.

Wanyonyi is one of the world’s leading middle-distance runners.

The Kenyan won Olympic gold over 800 metres in 2024 and, with a personal best of 1:41.11, is among the fastest athletes in history over the distance.
