These Games Will Make or Break the 49ers’ 2026 Season

The San Francisco 49ers’ 2025-26 season ended with a blowout loss to the rival Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round.
Moving on from that kind of defeat is not easy. But the release of the 2026-27 schedule on May 14 gives the Faithful something to look forward to.
San Francisco’s opponents hold a combined .497 win percentage from last season, ranking the 49ers’ schedule 15th-easiest in the league. That is about as middle of the road as it gets.
With a roster still built to compete, these are the games on the 2026-27 schedule that will matter most if San Francisco wants to bounce back.
49ers vs. Top Divisional Rivals (Seahawks and Rams)
The NFC West might be the NFL’s toughest division in 2026. Seattle is coming off a Super Bowl win, and the Rams fell just one game short of reaching it themselves. Both teams are the current betting favorites to win it all this season.
Los Angeles only got better this offseason, adding Myles Garrett, Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, and more. Meanwhile, the Seahawks lost some key pieces from their championship run, including Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker, Coby Bryant and Boye Mafe, but re-signed Jaxson Smith-Njigba and Rasheed Shaheed to keep their core intact.
San Francisco will face both teams twice, starting with the Rams in Week 1 in Australia. It is an early test of whether the 49ers are real contenders or a step behind their rivals.
49ers vs. Los Angeles Chargers — Week 15
San Francisco faces one of the toughest four-game stretches in the NFL from Weeks 14 through 17, matching up against four elite teams, with only two of them at home.
Of the four, however, the Chargers look like the most winnable game and a near must-win for San Francisco’s playoff hopes. It also carries a fun storyline, as this will be the first regular-season matchup between the 49ers and former head coach Jim Harbaugh.
The 49er Faithful are known for flooding SoFi Stadium with red, and Week 15 should be no different. Stealing a road win in the middle of this stretch could be the difference between a playoff berth and a second straight early exit.
49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs — Week 16
Few regular-season matchups carry as much weight as this one.
Since Kyle Shanahan took over in San Francisco, the 49ers are 0-5 against Kansas City across the regular season and postseason. Of course, two of those losses came in the Super Bowl.
Week 16 gives San Francisco a chance to change that narrative, especially with Patrick Mahomes coming off the worst injury of his career.
49ers vs. Philadelphia Eagles — Week 17
The 49ers and Eagles have developed a real rivalry over the last few years, dating back to the 2023 NFC Championship Game. San Francisco added fuel to it last postseason, stunning Philadelphia 23-19 in the Wild Card round.
A Week 17 meeting only raises the stakes. By that point in the season, both teams could be fighting for playoff positioning, making this one of the most consequential games on the 49ers’ schedule.
