The Cubs unveil the first views of Champions Gate

Last month I posted this article with details of the Cubs’ new Champions Gate, which will be installed on the Clark Street side of Gallagher Way west of Wrigley Field. It will honor not only the 2016 World Series champions on their 10th anniversary, but also commemorate the Cubs’ other two World Series titles in 1907 and 1908.
This week the Cubs have released renderings of what Champions Gate will look like. One of those views is at the top of this post, what you’d see from the Clark Street side. Here are some other views. First, the view from inside Gallagher Way looking back toward Clark Street:
Here are two views as you’d see it at night:
And here’s one that shows some history of the three Cubs World Series championship teams that will be installed on the gate.
Per this article by Meghan Montemurro in the Tribune, the Cubs have left room for similar notes for future Cubs champions. Quoting Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney:
“There’s going to be room for more player tributes as well as tributes to the team itself were we to win multiple more World Series, which we anticipate, so it’s something that’s going to live on,” Kenney said. “And it’s the primary entry to Gallagher Way, so thousands, millions of people over the years will walk through the arch to come into Gallagher Way, and as you come in to celebrate our Hall of Famers and all the other activities that happen there, you’ll constantly be reminded of the 2016 team and the others.”
This addition to the Wrigley Field campus is, in my view, well thought out and well designed, a great addition to Cubs history and lore. It will be formally dedicated on Saturday, July 18, part of an entire weekend that will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2016 World Series champions.
In the meantime, if you’re in the area, you can watch this being constructed as you are in Gallagher Way or go by on Clark Street.
