Seth Lugo and Brandon Nimmo are friends from their days with the New York Mets.

Now, Lugo pitches for the Kansas City Royals, and Nimmo plays for the Texas Rangers.

On Wednesday night, Nimmo laced a 106.6 MPH line drive directly off Lugo’s forehead.

It was hit so far that it deflected into right field.

Nimmo nearly tried to check on Lugo before even going to first base, but he got toward the mound as soon as he could.

Lugo had a huge lump on his head and came out of the game.

Seth Lugo injury update

Lugo seemed to be doing OK almost immediately as he joked with Nimmo that he should’ve hit a home run instead:

After the game, the Royals said that Lugo would undergo standard concussion protocol and testing.

It seems like it could’ve been much, much worse.

The fact that the ball deflected into right field likely means it didn’t hit Lugo totally square.

It also avoided hitting a little further down his head, which maybe would’ve been worse.

It’s one of the scariest things that can happen on a baseball diamond, and the good news is that Lugo seems like he’ll be OK.
