SDGA Junior golf roundup: Jack Gillen claims title at meet in Brookings

Jul. 24—BROOKINGS, S.D. — Mitchell’s Jack Gillen came out on top in his age group at the South Dakota Golf Association Junior Tour event on Wednesday, July 22 at Edgebrook Golf Course.

Gillen, competing in the boys intermediate age 12-13 group, shot a 6-over-par 76 and won his division by two strokes over Aurora’s Coy Friedrich. Gillen topped an age group that included 14 competitors.

Other Mitchell-area competitors in the Brookings event included Brooks Aadland, who was fifth in the boys 10-11 age grouping, shooting a 41 over nine holes. Miles Lunning, of Brandon, won the age group. He had a hole-in-one on the 239-yard par-4 No. 10 hole to start his day, leading to a 7-under-par 27 and a nine-stroke victory.

Other recent SDGA notable Junior Tour performances:

* At Hillsview Golf Course in Pierre on Tuesday, Chamberlain girls golf standout Trey Speer shot a round of 79 to win the age 16-18 girls division.

* Also in Pierre, Rhetoric Sazue and Chase McQuirk both had top-five finishes in the boys age 16-18 grouping. Sazue, of Reliance, shot a 76 and finished fourth, while McQuirk, of Oacoma, shot a 77 and finished fifth. Tate Stoeser, of Fort Pierre, won the division with an even-par-72.

* Playing in the age 14-15 girls division at Bakker Crossing on Thursday in Sioux Falls, Scotland golfer Campbell Mogck shot a round of 95, which was good for third in the division. Sioux Falls’ Lauren Wolthuizen won the group with a round of 81.

* In the SDGA Mini Tour event at Lenkota Country Club in Lennox on Thursday, Winner’s Trigg Haiar took fifth place in the nine-hole boys 10-11 age group, shooting 46. Sioux Falls’ Rylan Karels won the group with a round of 37.

Many of these same junior golf standouts will compete July 27-29 at the SDGA 15-and-under junior championships at Hart Ranch Golf Course in Rapid City. The final SDGA Junior Tour event of the season will be July 29 at Spring Creek Country Club in Harrisburg.
