Former NFL safety Ryan Clark spent more than a decade at ESPN as an analyst, becoming one of the network’s most prominent football voices in recent years.
Never afraid to speak his mind, Clark certainly wasn’t every viewer’s favorite analyst, which made him a lightning rod after frequently delving into social and political issues on the air.
ESPN fired Clark on Monday, and the nature by which he was let go is generating some controversy.

Why was Ryan Clark fired by ESPN?
Clark’s firing comes as part of a larger round of layoffs at ESPN, but his exit reportedly isn’t just a financial decision.
According to The Athletic, executives at ESPN “soured on Clark” in recent months as a result of the way he conducted himself on air. The report refers to an on-air incident between Clark and analyst Peter Schrager in September, in which Clark belittled Schrager because he never played in the NFL.
Clark also raised some eyebrows by taking contract negotiations public in 2024 when his deal with the network was expiring.
“The season is over. The deal is up. Time to make a decision,” Clark tweeted.
After some viewers called for Clark’s ouster, the former NFL safety saw his time with the network end after more than 11 years.
Clark addressed ESPN’s layoffs on Tuesday but avoided discussing his particular situation, instead sending “prayers and love” to other employees laid off by the network.

Clark took some heat for an interaction with Schrager in September, in which he told his fellow analyst, “That’s the non-player in you,” when Schrager defended CeeDee Lamb’s performance in the Cowboys‘ season-opening loss.
Schrager pushed back on Clark, who responded, “Peter, what I need for you to do is not get mad and let me finish.”

Clark later tweeted a public apology, but the incident lingered in the minds of some of ESPN’s decision-makers, according to The Athletic.

Was Ryan Clark fired on air?
Clark was told about his firing during a break on “NFL Live” on Monday and did not continue with the show.
ESPN was hoping to inform Clark on Tuesday, The Athletic reported, but word leaked to the media late Monday afternoon that he was being let go. Rather than let Clark find out through the media, the network chose to inform Clark minutes after a live appearance on the show.

Clark was making more than $2 million per year at ESPN, according to The Athletic.
An extension in 2024 came after Clark took negotiations public, saying he believed he “deserved more” in his previous deal and making a public plea for ESPN to “make a decision” on his future.
Two years later, a final decision has been made.
