Some surprising new details have emerged in the case of former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who was arrested for DUI in Wisconsin on Saturday.
The California Post is reporting via the New York Post that Romo has been issued one citation for “refusing to take a test for intoxication after arrest” stemming from his July 23 run-in with police in Milwaukee.
Romo was pulled over on an interstate shortly after he had completed a round at the Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf tournament. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office wrote in an arrest report that the 46-year-old was taken into custody and booked on a charge of operating while intoxicated, first offense, after performing poorly on standardized field sobriety tests.
The good news for Romo is that the DA in this case just said it was a traffic violation, not a criminal charge, which Romo will face at his first court appearance on September 21st.
This is the first time that Romo, who has been with CBS for nine years as an NFL analyst, has been in any kind of legal trouble. So far, CBS has decided not to fire him. However, it does appear that he may step back from any public appearances for a while to save face.
He is reportedly embarrassed by the whole situation, and although he plans to step back a little, he does not plan to step away.
Romo’s contract, which runs through 2030, reportedly pays $180 million.
