United States President Donald Trump has been impossible to ignore throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Unfortunately for him, not all the attention he received was positive attention, and that was very clear on Sunday afternoon.

During Sunday afternoon’s World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, Trump was showered with boos multiple times as fans expressed their displeasure at his presence at the match and his involvement in the ceremony afterward.

Trump Sparked Controversy at the World Cup

While both Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino have claimed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico was highly successful, not everyone felt that way.

Trump and the United States have faced a lot of criticism throughout the tournament for a wide variety of reasons.

Fans have expressed frustration at FIFA’s decision to allow Trump to hand the trophy to the victors following the World Cup Final, the treatment of Iranian players throughout the tournament, the Americanization of the sport with commercials during “hydration breaks,” an extended Super Bowl style halftime show at the final, and championship rings, and most notably, Trump’s involvement in getting the red card suspension to Folarin Balogun overturned.

The Balogun red card situation sparked such widespread outrage throughout the international soccer community that it sounds like there is at least a chance that it could cost Infantino a re-election bid.

Trump Booed at World Cup

On Sunday afternoon, Trump attended the World Cup Final between Spain and Argentina, but it’s safe to say he did not receive a warm reception from the fans in the stands as he was booed multiple times, the loudest of which came after the match.

Following Spain’s 1-0 win over Argentina, Trump made his way to the field to take part in the postgame ceremony, where he helped award the players with their hardware following the final. As he stepped onto the field, however, he was showered with boos.

While the boos might not have come through quite so clearly on the Fox broadcast, they could be heard very clearly in fan videos from the stands.

‘Not a Mixed Reaction’

Needless to say, the chorus of boos for Trump sparked a lot of reactions.

MASSIVE BOOS for Trump at World Cup. He has to be livid!” wrote content creator Brian Krassenstein in a post on X.

“This is not a mixed reaction,” wrote political analyst Jim Stewartson.

“I am sorry but seeing MAGA cope after Trump was mercilessly booed at FIFA is the funniest thing on the planet. They are denying he was booed when at the end of this clip it is abundantly obvious the entire world hates Donald Trump’s guts,” prominent political commentary account Call to Activism wrote in a post on X.

Trump just got drowned in boos at the World Cup. For a man obsessed with crowd size and applause, that one had to hurt,” prominent commentator Brian Allen wrote.

Audience boos drown out the music as Trump walks on to present the FIFA World Cup trophy. Probably made the whole world boo at home too,” political analyst Rachel Bitecofer wrote in a post

Trump booed as he arrives for the trophy presentation, his name wasn’t even read out by the stadium announcer which tells you everything,” wrote soccer reporter Sean O’Connor, who was at the match.

“Most universally hated president in history,” someone else added.

“Crazy how the Trump cult swear Trump wasn’t booed and it’s all fake news from the left… yet the real video from the people in the stands that were there, can’t be denied…” another commenter wrote.

This, of course, is not the first time Trump has been booed at a high-profile sporting event recently as he was showered in boos during his appearance at the NBA Finals in Madison Square Garden in support of the New York Knicks. Trump, however, insisted that it was “mostly cheers” despite what everyone else witnessed.
