Simone Resta Defends George Russell, Confirms Spa Software Bug Affected Both Mercedes Cars

The fallout from George Russell’s disastrous opening lap at the 2026 Belgian Grand Prix continues to dominate the Formula 1 paddock. After intense online speculation regarding perceived favoritism toward his rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes is officially clearing the air.

According to Mercedes Strategic Development Director Simone Resta, the team has been heavily investigating the severe energy deployment deficit on Russell’s side of the garage. As it turns out, the issue that culminated in a DNF at Spa actually began weeks ago at the British Grand Prix.

The Silverstone Origins and the Driving Style Factor

While the battery failure at Spa was the most catastrophic manifestation of the problem, the root cause has been puzzling the Brackley engineers since Silverstone. In a newly released team debrief, Resta revealed that the initial telemetry pointed to a surprising culprit: the driver himself.

“We started noticing differences in energy distribution between our two cars at Silverstone,” Resta explained. “Based on our analyses, we concluded that one of the main reasons for this is the difference in driving styles between the two drivers”.

Modern 2026 F1 regulations require an incredibly precise 50/50 balance between the internal combustion engine and the 350kW electric motor. Throttle application and braking points directly dictate how the car harvests and deploys energy. Ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, Russell worked intensively to adapt his driving style to mirror Antonelli’s in an attempt to cure the top-speed deficit.

However, Resta confirmed that despite Russell’s intensive adjustments, the W17 continued to show alarming differences in deployment. This admission from Mercedes validates Russell’s weekend-long complaints that the car was fundamentally failing him on the straights, despite his best efforts to adapt to the machinery.

Mercedes’ Fleet-Wide Software Bug at Turn 1?

Resta also addressed the specific incident that ultimately ruined Russell’s race: the terrifying 0% battery deployment on the climb up Eau Rouge that left him vulnerable to the Lap 1 crash with Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.

Following Toto Wolff’s post-race comments claiming the issue was fleet-wide, F1 fans were quick to point out that Antonelli successfully navigated the opening lap and went on to win the race. However, Resta’s technical debrief confirms that the rookie did, in fact, suffer from the exact same glitch.

“The issue George experienced at the race start stemmed from a software problem that affected both of our cars,” Resta stated. He detailed that the software bug specifically impacted the energy harvesting limit at Turn 1 (La Source), which directly resulted in an energy boost failure from Turn 1 all the way through Turn 5.

“This situation affected both George and Kimi, and despite good starts from both, they lost positions,” Resta added.

While Antonelli managed to survive the sudden lack of deployment and ultimately fight his way back to the front to extend his championship lead, Russell was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Caught in the slipstream trap at Les Combes with zero electrical defense, the software bug ultimately triggered the collision that ended his Belgian Grand Prix. Mercedes now faces a critical summer break to patch the software and ensure their cars can harvest properly when the season resumes in Zandvoort.
