After news broke that Dusty May was taking the Dallas Mavericks job, or at least after the shock wore off, the immediate question was: who’s next in Ann Arbor?

According to Pete Thamel, it’s assistant Mike Boynton, assuming the parties can come to an agreement. And why wouldn’t they?

Boynton was head coach at Oklahoma State from 2017-2024, where he had a middling record. However, Michigan is a much bigger platform than OSU, and he’s been in the system for a couple of years.

It’s probably the smart thing for Michigan to do, but if they go outside, they could look at Billy Donovan or Josh Schertz.

Two interesting Duke angles on this. First, the Mavericks have three former Blue Devils on the roster in Dereck Lively, Kyrie Irving, and Cooper Flagg. Lively has been mentioned in trade talks, with Miami being one possible destination being Miami. However, given what we saw May do with big men at Michigan, he might want to hang on to Lively.

He’ll probably be a pretty good coach for Flagg as well.

Beyond that, Duke and Michigan have a major game planned for this fall. If Michigan ends up losing a big par of its roster after May’s departure, that game will not be nearly as alluring. Players get a 15-day chance to transfer if the coach leaves, so there are no guarantees here.
