Mark Madden says quiet part out loud about Will Howard’s future with Steelers

The ever-outspoken voice of Pittsburgh sports has broken his silence on Will Howard’s future with the Pittsburgh Steelers, as Mark Madden suggested Howard may be in pole position for the backup quarterback job.

On a new episode of the “Madden Monday” podcast, the backup quarterback spot was tabbed as “Howard’s job to lose,” which isn’t great news to hear if you’re a Mason Rudolph fan.

“Do you know what’s going to be a gold mine this year? Steelers exhibition games because of Will Howard,” Madden said via his podcast. “…I think it’s Will Howard’s job to lose: No. 2 QB. I don’t agree with it, necessarily. But I think that’s how it is.

“[Drew] Allar is No. 3, no matter what, because they will not cut the guy they just drafted in the third round, no matter what. So I think it’s down to Howard and Rudolph for No. 2. I think that’s the consensus.”

Madden added that McCarthy is highly unlikely to keep four quarterbacks and that Rudolph could be the one on the outside looking in.

While the situation may be obvious to some, as Howard has been projected as the top backup QB this offseason, Madden’s comments highlight a positional battle that fans should keep a close eye on during training camp.
