Pittsburgh Pirates starting shortstop Konnor Griffin began his rehab assignment on Wednesday and looked like he could be back in the MLB soon.
Griffin reached base in all four of his plate appearances in his first rehab start in Double-A, which included a home run and a triple. After his home run in the seventh inning, Griffin was taken out of the game, but it had nothing to do with the injury.
“I feel good,” Griffin said after the game on Wednesday. “It’s just taking it easy, not letting a good game dictate it. I’m ready to go. It’s more just about getting reps at shortstop, making throws, because that’s the most important thing. I don’t know what their plan is. I’m just going to take it day by day and enjoy just getting to play when I can.”
MLB.com’s Aiden Stepansky reported that the plan is to have Griffin return to Pittsburgh on Thursday and be evaluated, and continue his rehab. However, that doesn’t mean Griffin will be activated, as the plan was to play five to seven innings on Wednesday.
Griffin also believes the injury can be a blessing in disguise to help him fix some issues he wanted to fix.
“I felt like I was really getting comfortable up there in the big leagues, but I tried to find the positives,” Griffin said. “I got to go to Florida and really just focus on some things I wanted to work on, and didn’t have to worry about playing games every day.”
Regardless, after his rehab start on Wednesday, it appears Griffin is getting close to returning to the big leagues, which will boost the Pirates’ offense.
Pittsburgh will close out its series against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday at 12:35 p.m. ET.
