Key FSU tight end target commits to SEC program

Florida State football’s search for a second tight end in its 2027 recruiting class has hit another snag. Colton Johnson, a three-star target from Baxter, Tennessee, has committed to the Ole Miss Rebels, announcing the news on Thursday.

Johnson officially visited the Seminoles in June and was also considering the Alabama Crimson Tide, Indiana Hoosiers, North Carolina Tar Heels, and Purdue Boilermakers. He was the only tight end that FSU hosted on an official visit.

He is ranked as the No. 633 overall player and No. 34 tight end in the 247Sports composite. He is also the No. 28 player from Tennessee.

While missing out on Johnson hurts, tight end coach Chris Thomsen already has a commitment from Connor Winn, giving them one addition at the position. The three-star prospect has been committed to FSU since July 1, 2025, making him FSU’s longest-tenured commit.

Johnson had a productive junior season at Upperman High School, where he also plays baseball and basketball. He caught 37 passes for 615 yards and four touchdowns, also running one in. He also plays linebacker for them and recorded 133 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, and one forced fumble.

FSU head coach Mike Norvell loves to have multiple tight ends on the field at a time, and the Seminoles are typically looking to sign two per year. With Johnson off the board, they will have to look for a new target if they want to do so in 2027.
