Former World Cup winner Khedira part of Mourinho staff at Real Madrid

Former World Cup winner Sami Khedira has joined the staff of coach José Mourinho at Real Madrid where he spent five years of his playing career.

Real posted a picture of Mourinho and his staff including former Germany midfielder Khedira on their website on Friday.

“The role at Real Madrid now gives me the opportunity to take the next step in my sporting career,” Khedira was quoted as saying in a statement by streaming portal DAZN where he had worked up to now.

Mourinho brought Khedira to Real at the start of his first tenure in 2010. Khedira spent five years at the Spanish top side, playing 161 matches for them and winning the Champions League in 2014 under Carlo Ancelotti.

Khedira, who won the World Cup in 2014, ended his playing career in 2021.

He worked as a pundit for several years, saying that “DAZN gave me the opportunity to experience football from a different perspective after the end of my career and to share my experience with the fans.”

Mourinho has returned to Real after the club first parted ways with Xabi Alonso and then with Alvaro Arbeloa at the end of a season without a trophy.

Mourinho won LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup during his first term 2010-2013.

Pre-season training starts on Monday and Mourinho told club TV on Friday that “working for Real Madrid is an honour and a responsibility.”
