Joel Embiid hails Max Verstappen as the GOAT after stunning Lewis Hamilton overtake during Hungarian GP
Joel Embiid was locked in on the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, hailing Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen as the GOAT after an incredible overtake.
Embiid just saw his Philadelphia 76ers land LeBron James and be considered among the favorites for the 2027 NBA Championship.
But while the offseason still has two months left, Embiid was watching this week’s Formula 1 race in Hungary and was left amazed by Verstappen.
Joel Embiid couldn’t believe Max Verstappen’s audacious overtake on Lewis Hamilton
During lap 16 of the Hungarian GP, Verstappen completed a double overtake on teammate Isack Hadjar and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton in a sensational move.
Embiid made his stance on the F1 GOAT debate clear by praising Max’s audacious move on Hamilton, who was on fresh new hard tyres after pitting the lap before.

Hamilton was on cold tyres and had exhausted his energy trying to overtake Hadjar on that straight, which is why he was a lame duck for Verstappen with warmed-up tyres and much superior grip.
Despite the tyre circumstances, it takes incredible racing skill to pull off a move like that. Verstappen is a four-time World Champion for a reason, and this move on his career rival and seven-time world champion Hamilton is a testament to his skill.
Verstappen would end the race in P3 behind McLaren’s Lando Norris and Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, while Hamilton finished P5 after a five-second penalty led to him losing P4 to teammate Charles Leclerc.
Verstappen is currently P7 in the 2026 World Driver’s Championship with 91 points, while Hamilton is P2 with 159 points.
