The Jacksonville Jaguars have completed their first six practices of training camp.
The team hit the field full-speed, conducting six sessions in seven days to test themselves as they prepare for the upcoming regular season.
We were able to see the first two padded practices of the year with offense and defense both taking a day where they pulled ahead of the other side of the ball.
The team is a week out from their joint practice with the New Orleans Saints. It’ll be the first of three weeks of joint practices with the Jaguars hosting the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the following weeks of the preseason.
After seeing the first week of camp, we tried our hand at the first depth chart projection of the preseason.
Quarterbacks
- Starter:Trevor Lawrence
- Backup: Nick Mullens
- What to know: As straightforward as a position can be. Lawrence will start and Mullens will back him up. The other two quarterbacks on the roster, Carter Bradley and Joey Aguilar, will have a chance to battle for the practice squad quarterback spot as preseason rolls along.
Wide receivers
- Starter: Jakobi Meyers, Parker Washington, Brian Thomas Jr., Travis Hunter
- Backups: CJ Williams, Josh Cameron
- What to know: Receiver is an absolutely loaded position. It’ll be hard for anyone who’s on the outside looking in to crack the list unless there’s an injury here. Williams and Cameron have looked great throughout the start of camp.
Running back
- Starter: Bhayshul Tuten, Chris Rodriguez Jr.
- Backups: LeQuint Allen Jr., Ameer Abdullah
- What to know: This position will largely be by committee. We saw Rodriguez get his first team reps of the since signing recently and he looked good in limited action. Allen will get reps based on his pass protection skillset and Abdullah has really flashed as a reserve.
Tight End
- Starter:Brenton Strange, Nate Boerkircher
- Backups: Quintin Morris, Tanner Kozoil
- What to know: This is a position where the team could opt to keep an extra body. In that case Hunter Long would join the reserves. Strange and Boerkircher will see the majority of action.
Offensive line
- Starter:Anton Harrison, Ezra Cleveland, Robert Hainsey, Patrick Mekari, Walker Little
- Backups:Cole Van Lanen, Wyatt Milum, Jonah Monheim, Emmanuel Pregnon, Chuma Edoga,
- What to know: Is Harrison finally going to get his chance to start at left tackle? It sure seems like it. Though until Cole Van Lanen returns we should probably hold all judgement.
Cornerbacks
- Starter: Montaric Brown, Jourdan Lewis, Travis Hunter, Jarrian Jones
- Backups: Jabbar Muhammad
- What to know: The cornerback room is a place where the team is set pretty much. Jones is trying to play his way into a starter role. Hunter’s reps have increased at the position since camp began. Brown is the headliner and Lewis is the veteran. Muhammad beats out other players based on his versatility to play inside or out.
Safeties
- Starter: Eric Murray, Antonio Johnson
- Backups: Caleb Ransaw, Rayuan Lane, Jalen Huskey
- What to know: Quietly one of the most solidified positions. Johnson steps into a starting role alongside Murray. Ransaw will see the field as his versatility allows him to play multiple positions. Lane is a special teams ace and Huskey will be brought along as the season goes on.
Linebackers
- Starter: Foye Oluokun, Ventrell Miller OR Branson Combs
- Backups: Dennis Gardeck, Jalen McLeod,
- What to know: I’ll take the easy out for now. Combs has come on strong to start training camp. But the starting position is Miller’s to lose. Gardeck is technically a starter depending on personnel packaging.
Defensive line
- Starter:Josh Hines-Allen, Arik Armstead, DaVon Hamilton, Travon Walker
- Backups: BJ Green, Matt Dickerson, Ruke Orhorhoro, Danny Striggow, Albert Regis, Wesley Williams
- What to know: This is one of the deeper positions on the roster, the team will deploy several defensive line arrangements.
Specialists
- Starter:Cam Little, Ross Matiscik, Logan Cooke
- Backups: N/A
- What to know: Another straightforward position grouping. These three are starters and that’s not changing barring an injury.
