Is Alphonso Davies playing in Canada's World Cup opener?

Alphonso Davies will have to wait to make his 2026 World Cup debut. Canada’s team captain will miss Friday’s opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.
Canada coach Jesse Marsch told reporters Davies had an MRI on Wednesday that revealed he is “healing incredibly well, almost completely.” Davies, who suffered an ACL tear in March 2025, has played only two of Canada’s last 21 games.
Since arriving to World Cup training camp on June 1, Davies has worked primarily with an independent trainer and is not practicing in full, according to The Athletic.
Davies, 25, is integral to Canada’s World Cup hopes. He’s a four-time Canada Player of the Year and a two-time CONCACAF Men’s Player of the Year with Bayern Munich.
Will Alphonso Davies return during World Cup?
Marsch indicated it’s possible Davies could return soon.
“I think that having (Davies’) private physio here has been very helpful, and the concentration on his body’s needs every day,” Marsch said. “And so we are really hopeful that over the next days and week that we can accelerate things and give him a chance to contribute here soon.”
Canada is scheduled to take the pitch again next Thursday against Qatar.
